The Family Myth
Where do you think the "family myth" in American culture comes from? What are some possible sources for the idealized picture we painted together in class (mom and dad, two kids, dog, two-car garage, picket fence, baseball and a home-cooked meal)? In what current situations, contexts, or debates is this ideal picture evoked - for good or for ill?

The media has played a big role in what the ideal family is and should be.For example, shows like "Leave It To Beaver". This displayed all of those pre-established characteristics. In current situations we look to our leaders to exemplify what we as Americans expect ourselves to be(even if that's not how we truly live). This can evoke good or bad outcomes. Families can strive to become this picture perfect image, or begin to doubt their interpersonal relationships because they don't necessarily fit into these diminsions.
The American "standard" belief is nothing but a BIG myth. Majority of the families today are like you have four different parents and your biological parents dont get alone. So now you are going back and forth, from home to home and holidays to holidays. Most of the time families break up is because the other partner maybe seeing someone else, he/she is not loyal , trustworthy, etc. In the beginning of every relationship you see how the partners go above and beyond to get you now once they have you there is nothing else there is for them to do. So to sum that up families are different in their own ways, no one lives up to the American "standard" belief. Accept no ones definition of your life; define your own
I agree, most families don't live up to the "standard" American belief that most families should all be perfect. Maybe when your a child you family seems good, but as you grow older things start to happen and you realize that your parents are always fighting, and eventually divorce. These days almost half of families experience divorce and I am sure that the number will continue to ride. The American "standard" belief is definitely a big myth.
The picture that people try to create for young adults is completly fake. I believe that unrealistic standards are being created and that American Culture is setting more people up for disappointment especially all of the little girls who have dreams of becoming stay at home moms and have a big white house witha picket fence, two kids and a fathful loving husband
