Lamott tells us about the effects of religion on the lives of a variety of people of different layers of society. She also describes how she went through various stages of life and developed a fervent belief in God, even though she was very much opposed to religion and Christianity before.
Religion plays a major role in the American society. For example, some people base their view of the world entirely from the religious perspective.
Do you think that a greater entity or entities, such as God or Allah, exist? How do you think religion affects your life, if at all? If it does, do you think it is a positive influence or a negative one? Finally, do you think religion has a place in the modern world or do you think it is a thing of the past?

I grew up with Athiest parents, so I never really grew up with religion in my life. I think because of that it's hard for me to begin to believe in the idea of a god. To me, death will be just like how it was before I was born, there will nothing and I'm really okay with that. I personally don't think there really is any "out there", I hope that I'm wrong abut that for the sake of others belief's.
I do not believe in the idea of God. I can't imagine him creating anything like how society is today with all the hate and animosity. Also the super religious people seem to be the most unhappy and closeminded people of all. Why is something that is different from what you believe wrong and why on earth would you damn people to hell? Religion also seems to contradict itself and raise more questons then answers. I do think that religion is a comfort blanket for some people to hide them from the harsh reality of the real world. I think religion should not be involved in the modern world. I get really mad when it gets tangled up in politics and is used to judge the quality of someone's life. One can be perfectly content without religion.
My parents are both Catholic so church has been a big part of my life. As i grew older though i statred to question things about religion. I still believe in God and most of what my Cathloic Religion teaches me, but i still do not practice all of it. I think God still exsist inside every one of us whether or not you believe in God. I agree with pop about religion not being involved in politics because the church and state were meant to be seperate and should remain seperate. On the other hand i have to disagree about religion as a blanket from the real world. Religion can still be used to find a path in life for those who are lost. Religion teaches us that faith can help a person withstand anything this world throws at us. I think everyone has a religion even if it does not involve a diety. All you need in life is faith. And as for God makign the world today... I grew up reading the Boble an if I am to read it like a history book God created the Earth and when humans turned bad he destroyed it with a flood. IN the story God made the rainbow as a promise never again to destroy his own creation; it is our free will that God gave us that has turned our society to hate.
I also grew up in a Catholic family, and went through religious education all through elementary school, but stopped shortly after. I still go to church sometimes, but not very often at all. As I grow older it seems harder to believe in a God than before. With all of the theories of evolution and everything, which seems to all make sense. However, I would say that I do believe in God. I also agree that religion should not be involved with the modern world. I believe that religion is becomming a thing of the past.
I believe in God because I've been through so much in the past and I made it through those rough times; I beleve because there was someone looking out for me. Religion has givin people an accentive to want and live a honest and good life. Relgion has deffinitly helped me in a positive way and helped me to be a better person
