Us and Them

In the essay by Maria Poggi Johnson, the main character is christian and moves to a mostly Jewish neighborhood. She explores the Jewish religion and teaches it in her school. The experience of learning more about the Jewish faith strengthens her beliefs about her own religion. Have you ever questioned your faith when learning of another religion or has others differences made you feel more confident in your beliefs? Have you ever felt left out in a situation where you were surrounded by another religion that was not of your own? Describe a moment in your life that you have either questioned or had been assured of your religion.

Any time in my high school religion classes, where we would be learning about another culture. It would make me feel more secure in my religion. Also, the fact that I went to a catholic high school, only streghtened my beliefs in my religion

I am always interested in other religions. Learning how they do things, how is it different from other religions. I have never questioned my faith, but I have always wondered about when marrying someone is it wise to marry into a different religion than you were brought up knowing? I am not big on going to church, not that I don't enjoy it, i just don't usually go, doesn't mean I don't have faith though. I used to have long talks with my friends who would go to Church a lot. We would talk about God and all the different beliefes. I really enjoyed those talks, I feel that made a difference for me.

There has been plenty of times where i have questioned my faith. I never questioned it because of other religious views but more because of scentific findings. Now i'm more open to the possiblity that maybe god didn't create humans but I believe that there is a god for other perposes.

I have not questioned my faith, but I have wondered about other religions. Most of them I don't really understand. When I was young, I went to a Catholic church with my friend and I was competely unaware of what was going on. I felt competely left out, but it made me more secure in my religion.

My family usually only attends church on holidays, mainly to please my mom. When I attend Christian church I follow along and try to consider if I believe what is being taught to me, because if I had to pick a religion it would be Christianity. I have an open mind to most all religions. There are too many different religions out there for me to choose one without giving many of them a chance. I would like to experience and learn more about different religions until one religion strikes me as being the truth.

I have never thought much of religion, since I haven’t really tried to explore my own (largely nominal) religion, much less other ones. Of course, it is sometimes fascinating and important to learn about other people's beliefs, but I haven’t seen it as something extremely necessary for everyday life. I have never felt uncomfortable around people of varying religions, mainly because it just doesn't matter to me what deity they choose to follow. There were no great moments that either made me a more fervent follower or encouraged me to convert to another religion, though I do not like people that force their beliefs on others. I think that religion is for those that seek something to rely on in times of hardship or want to lead a life of established principles, but if you don’t need support or can establish your own principles, religion loses much of its appeal.

I have always had friends of different religions throughout my high school life. I have learned a lot about them and although i do not agreee with them, some of the ideas of other religions have strengthen my own beliefs.
